ABOUT  Dave

I have always loved the challenge of transforming a blank piece of paper into a drawing or painting with meaning and emotional ties to my vision.  The act of creating has been the theme of my life. I was educated at the University of Minnesota in the School of Architecture and Design, a school that stressed DESIGN.  While studying architecture I took many art classes, quickly learning there is DESIGN in art as well as architecture.  I continued my studies in Illustration at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.  For several years I worked as a commercial illustrator making purposeful art that told a story.   While I made my living for 50 years as an architect, I continued to paint enjoying the freedom of making art without the constraints imposed by architecture. I continued to study art taking numerous classes and workshops from notable instructors both locally and nationally. On the national level I have taken workshops with Eudes Correia, David Taylor, Steve Rogers, Skip Lawrence, Ted Nuttall, and Mary Whyte to name a few. In Rochester, NY I studied under Dick Kane, Jeanne Lindsay, g.a. Sheller while taking classes at the University of Rochester's Creative Workshop within the Memorial Art Gallery, a place where, since retirement in 2020 I now teach Drawing, Watercolor Painting, and Color and Composition.

My teaching at the Creative Workshop runs year-round with Spring, Fall and Winter sessions. I also enjoy conducting watercolor and plein air workshops for art groups around New York. Despite a busy schedule I try to paint daily and keep my imagination active by experimenting and playing; always thinking about the next painting!
